Overview
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Solution is indicated for use as an anti-inflammatory and/or glucocorticoids agent in conditions such as acute arthritis. It may also be used as supportive therapy in non-specific dermatoses such as summer eczema and atopy, provided proper therapy is also instituted to correct the cause of the underlying dermatosis. It may also be used prior to or after surgery to enhance recovery of poor surgical risks, provided that it is used in conjunction with full antibiotic coverage.

Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Solution is FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine. The usual dose in horses is 2.5 to 5 mg I.V. If permanent corticosteroid effect is required, oral therapy with dexamethasone may be substituted.

Side Effects
Administration of dexamethasone may play a role in the development of laminitis in horses. Hyperglycemia, diarrhea, increased thirst and increased urination have been observed in some species. Cushing’s syndrome in dogs has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated steroid therapy.

This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it. Systemic use of glucocorticoids is generally considered to be contraindicated in systemic fungal infections. When therapy is to be withdrawn after prolonged corticosteroid administration, the daily dose should be reduced gradually over a number of days, in a stepwise fashion. Corticosteroid therapy may induce parturition in large animal species during the latter stages of pregnancy.

Overdose
Glucocorticoids when given short term are unlikely to cause harmful effects, even in massive dosages. In the event of overdose contact your veterinarian. Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, diarrhea and Cushing’s syndrome in certain species.

Storage
Store this medication at room temperature (59ºF and 86ºF). Keep this medication out of the reach of children. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
