Extended Information:
Typically, the diarrhea is self-limiting and typically does not lead to systemic illness of the foal. The cause of the diarrhea is unknown, but some veterinarians believe it is related to the changing of the flora within the gastrointestinal tract of the foal. One product that can easily assist in the treatment of the loose watery stool is Diarsanyl.
Diarsanyl is a safe, practical, and effective approach to treating diarrhea in cats, dogs, calves, and foals. The key component of Diarsanyl is montmorillonite, a smectite clay, which has a unique tri-lamellar structure allowing for absorption and adsorption of toxins, bacteria, viruses, enzymes and free radicals, 15 times greater than Kaolin.
Montmorillonite is negatively charged and bound to cations. By exchanging cations, it allows the trapping of positively charge aggressive agents, 10 times more effective than Kaolin.
The characteristic assisting in the treatment of foal heat diarrhea is the large external surface area of the tri-lamellar montmorillonite clay, which permits the coating and reinforcing of the mucus layer, 4 times greater than Kaolin.
Diarsanyl has a protecting effect by mixing with the mucus and coating the intestinal mucosa, which reduces irritation and fluid loss. It also promotes the renewal of the mucus layer by stimulating mucus production by the crypt cells. Other contributing traits of Diarsanyl are the addition of vital electrolytes (sodium, Magnesium, and Potassium) which can be lost during bouts of diarrhea, along with dextrose, lactose, and glycerol to minimize the energy deficiency. All of these issues can be extremely important in a newborn foal and can be minimized using Diarsanyl.
