Tetracycline is effective against most of the common gram-negative bacteria that can cause problems in pet birds, exotic gamebirds, and racing pigeons. Tetracycline is indicated for infections which are susceptible to its actions. Tetracycline is the same as for oxytetracycline. Tetracyclines work by inhibiting protein synthesis, thereby impeding bacterial cell division. Tetracycline offers a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Tetracyclines are used to treat respiratory tract infections, bacterial enteritis, and urinary tract infections caused by tetracycline-susceptible microorganisms. Tetracyclines are also used to treat rickettsial diseases (e.g., borreliosis [Lyme disease] and Rocky Mountain spotted-tick fever).
