Tetanus Antitoxin, Equine Origin

U.S. Vet. Lic. No.: 188

Active Ingredient(s): TETANUS ANTITOXIN, EQUINE ORIGIN is prepared from the blood of healthy horses that have been hyperimmunized with repeated large doses of Clostridium tetani toxin. Each serial is tested for purity, safety, and antitoxin units in accordance with the applicable standard requirements issued by USDA.

Contains phenol and thimerosal as preservatives.

Indications: It is recommended for use in domestic animals as an aid in preventing and treating tetanus.

Dosage and Administration: TETANUS ANTITOXIN, EQUINE ORIGIN is recommended for use when a nonimmunized animal, or one whose immune status is unknown, suffers a deep penetrating wound that has or may become contaminated with soil. It provides quick, short-term protection. The antitoxin may also be administered to animals following castration, docking, and other operations performed on premises upon which tetanus infection has been a problem.

TETANUS ANTITOXIN, EQUINE ORIGIN confers immediate passive immunity lasting about 7-14 days. 1,500 units administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly is the recommended dose for prevention.

Large doses of TETANUS ANTITOXIN, EQUINE ORIGIN may provide a beneficial response in animals already infected with tetanus but the success of the treatment is not ensured. For treatment administer 10,000 to 50,000 units to horses and cattle and 3,000 to 15,000 units to sheep and swine. Animals that suffer slow healing puncture wounds or deep abrasions should be given a second dose of antitoxin in seven (7) days and additionally as considered necessary.

Precaution(s): Store in the dark at 2-7°C. Sterilize syringes and needles by boiling them in clean water. Use the entire contents when the bottle is first opened.

Caution(s): Anaphylaxis (shock) may occasionally follow the use of products of this nature. Epinephrine, or an equivalent drug, should be available for immediate use in these instances.

For veterinary use only.

Warning(s): Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.

Discussion: Tetanus is caused by a toxin (poison) produced by the growth of Clostridium tetani, an anaerobic (lives without air) micro-organism that may be carried into the wounds or sites of surgical operations.

Affected animals become stiff, have great difficulty swallowing and the pulse rate is increased. Breathing is labored. Spasmodic contractions of the muscle system occurs, extending muscles of the jaw. Thus, the term lockjaw is frequently applied. Legs are often spread, the tail is stiff with the abdominal muscles retracted. Tetanus stricken animals may be unusually sensitive to light and heat. The temperature of the animal generally remains normal, elevating only shortly before death.

Presentation: 1 x 1,500 unit, 10 x 1,500 unit, and 1 x 15,000 unit vials.

NAC No.: 11010321
